Zainul Abedin is arguably one of the Bengal region's most renowned artists. He is recognised primarily for a series of works executed during the Bengal Famine of 1943 that bore witness to the depravity and helplessness of its victims. Abedin, throughout his work and his teaching, sought to synthesize local traditions with modern international techniques and developments in art, thus creating a new Bengali modernism. Compare to another work from the series in: J. Ahmed, Art in Pakistan, Karachi, 1954, pl. 66.
