ZHANG DAQIAN (1899-1983) and others
This collection is offered by a family who were long-time friends of Zhao Shaoang, one of the foremost painters of the Lingnan School. Within the family Chao Tsin (Zhao Zhaojun, b.1909) was particularly close to the painter. Mr. Chao was a well known engraver and worked for the Chung-hwa Book Company. Among his many accomplishments, he prepared the engraving of the image of Sun Yatsen and chose the background painting by Zhao Shaoang that forms the 10,000 note during Republic of China. Chao Tsin was also an avid patron of the arts and collected paintings throughout his life. While he was closest with Zhao Shaoang, he was also friends with many other artists. Throughout Zhao Shaoang and Chao Tsins long friendship, which spanned more than fifty years, the artist from time to time lived with the latters family. In 1943 they lived together in Pine Forest in Chongqing and again in 1945 in Hong Kong. During these sojourns, Chao Tsin enthusiastically promoted exhibitions of his friends work and in return, he and his family were often given their choice of works by Zhao Shaoang.

Yan Gusheng was Zhang Daqian's friend from Chengdu, Sichuan. Native of Shaanxi, Yan was a studious and politically astute individual who assisted in the cataloguing of books in the Benyuan, the literary repository of the scholar Zhang Linkai. During this time he developed a taste for old prints and old literary works, so familiar was he with them that he could identify the books according to their covers and material, subsequently amassing a large collection of old books as well as art pieces.
Of sociable nature, Yan was friends with authors and artists alike, such as Xiang Chu, Lin Sijin, Xie Wuliang, Tao Liangsheng, Yu Youren, Shen Yimo, Ye Qianyu, Zhang Daqian, and often visited the Benyuan garden to discuss literary theories and other affairs. In 1938, Zhang visited Chengdu and lived in the residence of Yan. Zhang's inspiration to visit and document the Dunhuang caves were in part from having heard the adventures of Yan Jingqi (Yan Gusheng's nephew) at Dunhuang. During the war Zhang also lived at their residence for nearly two years - in 1943, it was Yan who helped organise Zhang's exhibition of his Dunhuang paintings.
