ZHANG HE (ACTIVE EARLY 17TH CENTURY)
THE PROPERTY OF A EUROPEAN SCHOLAR (LOTS 1638-1660) This collection of Chinese traditional paintings belongs to a scholar of East Asian art who has had a long and distinguished career as a teacher and author. He acquired these paintings over several decades, and they reflect his interest in literati-style paintings and his understanding of the history and artistry of this field. The album leaf by Zhang He (lot 1638) is the oldest painting in his collection and displays the finest brushwork and articulate composition of all the paintings in the collection. The pair of scrolls by Wu Guandai and Chen Huan (lot 1646), which were originally the front and back of a single fan, were the first items purchased to begin this collection. The contemporary paintings by Xie Zhiliu and Li Geng were presented to the owner as gifts during visits to Europe.

Zhang He, also known as Zhang Fengyi, was born in Changzhou in Jiangsu. Most of his few works that survive were produced in the 1720-30s and are in such private Japanese collections as that of Matazaemon Nakano (see Suzuki Kei's Comprehensive Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Paintings, JP 64, vol. 4). Both the Nanjing Museum and the Palace Museum, Beijing also have landscapes by Zhang He (see Zhongguo Gudai Shuhua Tumu, vol. 7, Beijing, 1988, p. 92 and vol. 21, 1999, p. 321, respectively.)
