1138-1141 FORMERLY IN THE COLLECTION OF KIDA KANSAKU Born in Kumamoto in Japan, Kida Kansaku (1879-1953) moved to Tianjin in 1900 and lived there for over 40 years. Fluent in Chinese, Kida wore his hair in a queue and dressed in the Chinese style. He was close to Kang Youwei, Luo Zhenyu, Zheng Xiaoxu, Xu Shichang and Weng Tonghe, and helped Puyi seek passage to Japan. Throughout his life Kida amassed nearly 300 works of Chinese painting and calligraphy, part of which he acquired from Luo Zhenyu, a classical scholar and epigrapher. One calligraphy work by Zhang Daqian from the same collection will be offered in the Fine Chinese Modern Paintings sale on 24 November 2014, Lot 1308.
