AIVAZOVKSY, Ivan (1817-1900). Autograph letter signed ('Giovani Aivazovsky') to Auguste Vecchy, St Petersburg, 28 August 1844, in eccentric Italian, 3 pages, 4to, integral address panel (old damp staining, causing wear at lower margin, with minor losses to text).
Aivazovsky reports his arrival in St Petersburg and his warm reception by the royal family, with the Tsar in particular very gracious, complimenting him, and ordering a number of paintings: 'Imperatore mi recivuto tanto bene che io mai non imaginava cosi, pure imperatrice et tutto familia imperiale l'imperatore parlato molto con me e ringrazia me per progresso che io fato in italia e in francia ... comprato tuti miei quadri e ordinato sei gran quadre tuti parte di mare baltico et poi devro fare di mare nero'. Aivazovsky goes on to give a few biographical details, giving his birth date as 1818.
