Near contemporary maroon half morocco, spines lettered directly in gilt and with raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers (spines lightly and evenly faded). RARE POULET-MALASSIS EDITION of this masterpiece of 18th-century libertine literature; the first edition since the original of 1793, and one of only approximately 150 copies. Les Aphrodites is the archetypal libertine novel, mixing a lively narrative with superbly written dialogue for a menagerie of picaresque characters, and engravings of the highest quality. Hubert Juin has described Les Aphrodites as ‘decidedly the most diabolically well-tuned erotic machine that could be conceived’. Dutel A-93; Gay-Lemonnyer I, 242; Pia Enfer, 77.
