BECKFORD, William (1759-1844) -- The Valuable Library of Books, in Fonthill Abbey … A Catalogue of 20,000 volumes… which will be sold by auction by Mr. Phillips. At the Abbey: September-October, 1823. 8° (230 x 145mm). Engraved frontispiece. (Without the leaf, 'Arrangement of the Fonthill view', following title in some copies, a few stains.) Modern half calf over old boards (corners rubbed). Provenance: Some prices recorded in a contemporary hand -- Charles Francis Bell (1871-1966, art historian; booklabel). The celebrated thirty-seven day auction of the magnificent books and matchless art collection which had filled Fonthill.

Davy & Sons for Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge, June 1882 – November 1883. 4 parts in 2 volumes. Large 8° (270 x 190mm). Later red half morocco. Provenance: J. A. Jamieson (bookplate) -- C.F. Bell (booklabel). With bound in copy letter from H.G. Bohn (1796-1884,) to ‘The Times’, Jan. 1882, explaining how Beckford repurchased some of his favourite books in the 1823 sale and then continued buying.

Extra Illustrated with 12 plates after J. and H. Storer (dated 1822) and J.P. Neale (dated 1824), also with extra letterpress inserted at end. (Frontispiece spotted, offsetting to title, marginal spotting in some additional plates.) Old red boards (rebacked). Provenance: Mid-19th-century ms note stating that the collection was formed by Beckford -- C.F. Bell (booklabel). FIRST EDITION of six, coinciding with the opening of james wyatt's edifice to the public gaze.
