BERNOULLI, Jakob (1654-1705). Opera. Geneva: for the heirs of Cramer and the brothers Philibert, 1744. 2 volumes in one with continuous pagination and signatures, 4° (241 x 193mm). Titles printed in red and black, 51 folding engraved plates, with the final advertisement leaf (a few plates a little stained). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with contrasting labels (upper joint a little worn, otherwise a little rubbed).
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of all Bernoulli's works save for his treatise on comets and a prognosticon. 'Bernoulli greatly advanced algebra, the infinitesimal calculus, the calculus of variations, mechanics, the theory of series, and the theory of probability [and] was one of the most significant promoters of the formal methods of higher analysis' (DSB).
