BINDING -- MOREAU, Pierre. Les Sainctes Prières de l'ame Chrestienne. Escrites et gravées après le naturel de la plume. Paris: P. Moreau, 1632. 12° (150 x 90mm). Engraved throughout, 106 unnumbered leaves of engraved text and full-page engravings of flowers and emblems within separately engraved borders. (Some mostly marginal spotting.) Contemporary morocco, large central shaped panel with red morocco onlays and an all-over design of sprays in gilt with the leaves painted green, edges gilt, marbled pastedowns (corners rubbed, front joint starting at foot).
AN ATTRACTIVE MOSAïQUé BINDING on an elegant prayer book, first published in 1631 by the writing master Pierre Moreau, and dedicated to Marie de Medici, whose arms are printed on the verso of the 25th leaf of this edition. Other copies of Moreau's work are known to have been bound by Florimond Badier, and other fine binders. Brunet notes that Moreau was the originator of matrices imitating hand-writing and was appointed 'imprimeur du roi' in 1642, printing various works in calligraphic characters. Copies are known with two additional typographic leaves bound at the end containing a notice to the reader and part of the privilege; apparently no precedence has been established. Cf. Brunet III, 1895-6.
