FIRST EDITION. With her first attempt at a novel, The Professor continually rejected by publishers, Charlotte Brontë reworked her story as a basis for Villette. Most critics believe the character of M. Paul Emanuel to be closely based on M. Héger, and Graham Bretton to be modelled on Brontë's publisher George Murray Smith, who was at one time a potential suitor. Parrish 95; Sadleir 349; Smith 6. (3)
