2 parts in 1 vol., 8° (202 x 125mm). Two engraved frontispieces. (Light mainly marginal spotting and staining, small hole at fore-edge of some leaves, not touching the text.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, gilt fillet, red edges (spine cracked, sides scuffed, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Unidentified eighteenth-century stamp on the title-page.
FIRST EDITION. The celebrated correspondence between Catherine and Voltaire, which spanned fifteen years and was brought to an end only by Voltaire's death, after which Catherine bought Voltaire's library. RARE: WorldCat records only two copies of this St. Petersburg Imperial Press edition in North America, at Columbia University and the New York Public Library. See Sopikov 2579.
