DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Autograph letter signed ('Charles Dickens') to J.C. d'Arnaud Gerkens, Tavistock House, 19 April 1853, thanking the recipient for a letter 'and its accompanying representation, by your pencil, of some of the chief characters in David Copperfield', complimenting him upon the 'delicacy and tenderness' of the drawing, which he will retain as 'proofs of your sympathy with the creatures of my imagination ... Their conception is so quiet and gentle, and their execution so free, that they unite two qualities which I very rarely find in similar designs', 2 pages, 8vo, bifolium. Provenance: Phillips sale, 11 June 1992, lot 73; private collection.
