I send you the books we spoke of. Pray accept them with most cordial thanks for all your kindness and generosity, and for the great consideration and care with which you treated Mrs. Dickens when she was ill. She and her sister join me in friendly regards to yourself and Mrs. Wilson. And I am Very faithfully yours Charles Dickens." Dr. James Wilson attended to Kate Dickens at the recommendation of Dr. Southwood Smith in late 1850-early 1851. Her case was considered "a nervous one" and "instead of living in Dr. Wilson's house, for reasons 'founded on my knowledge of her' she would stay in some cheerful cottage in the neighborhood" (Edgar Johnson, p.730). Wilson then urged that she should stay with him but Dickens refused. Eckel, p.77; Sadleir 686; Smith I:9.
