5 volumes in one, 4o (264 x 209 mm). Printed on blue-gray paper. 125 hand-colored engraved plates, each with tissue overlays bound-in (a few plates in vol.2 with minor dampstaining). (Some occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary calf-backed mottled boards, spine gilt (some minor wear and scuffing). Provenance: Kenneth K. Mackenzie (gifted to): The Horticultural Society of New York (bookplate recording bequest, blindstamp on plate 16); Robert De Belder; An Important Botanical Library (Christies New York, 5 June 1997, lot 287).
FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH originally issued as Botanisches Bilderbuch (published from 1794 to 1805) and containing the same set of plates found here along with another 27 not issued in this edition. In addition to the finely engraved plates, some of which are copied from Curtis's Flora Londinensis, Dreves also includes some information on the medicinal uses of the various plants.
