ESPERANTO – [KALOCSAY, Kalman (1891-1976) writing as:] PENETER, Peter. Sekretaj Sonetoj. N.p. [probably Budapest]: n.p. [c. 1931-2].
Duodecimo (143 x 104 mm). Twelve erotic plates by ‘Steba’. (Light marginal soiling.) Original wrappers, front cover with a full-page modernist design printed in red (text block detached, spine worn and with the hinges repaired on the verso, top corner of front cover chipped without loss to the illustration). Provenance: Karl-Ludwig Leonhardt (his sale, Zisska and Schauer, 10 May 2012, lot 1580).
RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF EROTIC VERSE IN ESPERANTO which introduced, and perhaps invented, much of the sexual vocabulary in that language. Ludwik Zamenhof, and other early pioneers of the world’s most popular constructed language, did not prioritize the creation of the sexual expressions that characterize informal conversation. Kalocsay’s erotic sonnets introduce to print, and probably invent, much of that vital, everyday language. Sekretaj Sonetoj closes with a vocabulary, itself in verse, defining neologisms such as ‘fiki’, ‘pico’ and ‘kako’. RARE: WorldCat records no copy in any institution worldwide; AE and ABPC record no other copy at auction.
