Large 2° (various sizes mounted to 670 x 500mm). 25 plates engraved by Fowler and hand-coloured by him and his family members, two engraved dedication plates, and two plates (the first two) in duplicate, all but the duplicate plates mounted. Broadside printed publication announcement with priced plate list mounted on front pastedown (Oxford: Bartlett, 1804), broadside announcement of the publication of the Robert King plate bound in, and broadside announcement of the publication of the Southwell Arch laid in at end. Contemporary russia-backed marbled boards, red leather title label on front cover, flat gilt spine (lightly rubbed, some wear at spine and edges). Provenance: pencilled price: for the plates and mounting, a total of £23.3.0.
Complete set of the rare appendix, containing mainly depictions of stained glass windows. The work was dedicated to Sir Joseph Banks who commented on Fowler's depictions of stained glass: 'Others have shown us what they thought those remains ought to have been, but Fowler has shown us what they are; and this is what we want' (ODNB).
