I Pregi della Toscana nell’impresse piu segnalate de Cavalieri di Santo Stafano … Dedicata all’Altezza Reale di Cosimo III. Gran Duca di Toscana e Gran Maestro dell’Ordine. Florence: Mattia Miccioni and Michele Nestenus, 1701. 2° (367 x 252). Half-title, portrait, dedication, engraved plate of the Tuscan arms, woodcut initials, head-and tail-pieces, and 37 engraved plates numbered in the plate. Contemporary laced vellum, later calf label. Provenance: Ernest Swain (bookplate) --The Cruising Association (bookplate, gilt stamp on upper cover and blind-stamp at title-page head).
FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. The order of knights of St. Stephen was found by Cosimo de Medici in 1562 with the purpose of defending the Tuscan coast against Barbary pirates and Turkish predators. The engraved plates by Hubert Vincent illustrate their many sea battles at Algiers, Negroponte, Bona, Sisto, Skiathos and Chios. Appended are list of these battles and ships’ captains.
