2o (340 x 225 mm). Engraved title by John Payne, over 2700 woodcut illustrations in text, ornaments and initials. (Title-page cut round and inlaid, 2 repairs along gutter, lacking front blank, some minor spotting and light browning.) 19th-century diced russia gilt (rebacked). Provenance: Lord Lilford (armorial bookplate, "Library Lilford label on front pastedown).
Third edition and the second by Thomas Johnson. A reissue of the 1633 edition, (see lots 92 and 93) with a new title-page dated 1636, in which Johnson corrected many of Gerard's errors, added 800 new species and 700 woodcuts. Brunet II: 1548; Hunt 230; Nissen BBI 698; STC 11752.
