Lots 1 and 2 each comprise six miniatures of 56 x 70mm, framed together in 19th-century gilt metal frames, 294 x 178mm overall. The text on the reverse of the miniatures is in a script typical of Italian law books, and the primo stile compositions identify the intact manuscript as made by the 13th-century Bolognese workshop known as the 'Gregory-Gratian Shop' from its specialisation in the illustration of Canon Law manuscripts (see S. L'Engle and R. Gibbs, Illuminating the Law. Legal Manuscripts in Cambridge Collections, Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, 2001). All but one of the miniatures contain a red-clad figure on the left representing a pope sitting in judgement (some fading of text on verso).
