HOGARTH, William (1697-1764). The Original and Genuine Works. London: by W. Bulmer for Boydell and Company, n.d. [but between 1790 and 1795]. Large 2° (665 x 489mm). Letterpress title and list of plates. 107 engraved plates on 88 sheets of wove paper with no watermarks. (Title and plate list with the margins extended and with some repairs, some marginal repairs including a longer marginal tear in plate 35, light marginal soiling.) Burgundy half morocco by J. Leighton with his stamp, spine gilt in compartments, one with Westminster’s crowned initial (extremities rubbed, cloth sides faded). Provenance: Hugh Lupus, 1st Duke of Westminster (1825-1899; bookplate, binding).
This copy, like the New York Public Library copy described by Paulson as a second edition, comprises 107 plates: one fewer than in the first edition of 1790; evidently Boydell issued this edition without amending the list of plates. The plate not included in this copy is plate 65, the variant of St Paul preaching before Felix. Paulson Hogarth’s Graphic Works, p.20.
