Contemporary dark blue straight-grained calf, covers with blind-stamped roll border, spine in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands, red morocco gilt labels in 2 compartments, edges gilt concealing a signed fore-edge painting by JOHN T. BEER of LAKE CONSTANCE, SWITZERLAND (upper hinge cracked, upper and lower joints lightly rubbed, particularly at head and foot); brown morocco gilt pull-off case by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Provenance: Estelle Doheny (bookplate; her sale Christie's New York, 21 February 1989, lot 1943).
