London: "The Field", 1878. 4°, title in red and black, numerous plates and plans, original green pictorial cloth gilt, front cover panelled in black and gilt with central motif of tennis balls surmounted by crossed rackets, lower cover panelled in blind, top edges gilt. Provenance: H.E. Butler, 1884 (signature on an endpaper and later bookplate as Viscount Mountgarret).
FIRST EDITIONS IN BOOK FORM AND A FINE COPY of this excellent history of real tennis by the distinguished musicologist, Julian Marshall. Pasted to the inside of the front cover is a list of the participants in the Oxford and Cambridge tennis matches between 1859 and 1885. The Hon. H.E. Butler (later Viscount Mountgarret) was in the winning Oxford pair in 1865.
