FIRST EDITION. Karlowitz (Sremski Karlovi in modern-day Serbia) is on the halfway point between the town Peterwardein in the Habsburg empire and Belgrad in the Ottoman empire on neutral territory. It was selected for the peace nagotiations between the Holy League of 1684 and the Ottoman empire. The Treaty of Karlowitz signed on January 26, 1699 ended the War of 1683-1697 and marks the beginning of the decline of the Ottoman empire and the rise of the Habsburg Monarchy as the main power in Cenral Europe. The peace negotionations are described in great detail, as well as customs of the negotiating parties as well was festivities and games. The plates include portraits, processions, a meeting of the nagotiating parties, and Scene of the Mohameddan Festival of the Bairam in Vienna. One plate is signed by FRANS VAN STAMPART (1675-1750) and JOHANN ANDREA PFEFFEL (1674-1748). Lipperheide Lb 24; Ruggieri 978 (10 plates).
