LIMA 1730 -- RIO, Alonso. Funebre, religiosa pompa a nuestra santissimo Padre Benedicto XIII, luster de la Iglesia y honor de la religion Dominicana. Celebròla el muy reverendo Padre Maestro Fray Alonso del Rio Lima: Juan Joseph Cossio, 1731.
4o (207 x 145 mm). Title and text within ornamental border. One engraved folding plate, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and woodcut initials (plate reinforced along folds). Contemporary vellum (covers bowed, some minor worming). Provenance: Hiram Bingham (bookplate); purchased from F. Perrez de Velasco by the South American Exploration Fund, Yale University (ink stamps on front pastedown, library label on front cover and spine).
Upon the death of POPE BENEDICT XIII (1649-1730), funeral services were held throughout the Catholic dominions. In this work, Rio describes the obsequies held in Lima in 1730 including the funeral oration, the approbation, and the salutation. The folding plate illustrates the elaborately decorated baldaquin erected within the Cathedral at Lima.
