    8° (155 x 93mm). Half-title. Numerous woodcut culs-de-lampe. Contemporary drawing of a bust of Michelangelo signed 'GK delt' inserted as frontispiece. (Recto of first blank leaf and verso of final leaf soiled, last leaf of index with paper crease affecting one line of text but sense recoverable, a few other leaves similarly creased, light marginal spotting.) Late 18th-/early 19th-century red morocco gilt, sides with roll-tooled border within double fillets, spine gilt in compartments with lyre and floral tools repeated five times, gilt edges (spine lightly sunfaded, a little rubbed). Provenance: Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792, first blank leaf inscribed: "Given me by Dr Shipley Bishop of St. Asaph 1779, Joshua Reynolds", title with his collector's mark in corner [both slightly cropped]) -- Dukes of Devonshire (Chatsworth bookplate, sale Christie's, 30 September 1981, lot 79).

    JOSHUA REYNOLD'S COPY OF MICHELANGELO'S RIME. Second edition. The frontispiece drawing is inscribed 'The original Bust by the Author is in the Roman capitol.' Brunet I, 1394; Gamba 249.
