MILLIN DE GRANDMAISON, Aubin Louis (1759-1818). Peintures de Vases Antiques vulgairement appelés Étrusques. Paris: Pierre Didot l'âiné for Dubois Maisonneuve, 1808-1810.
2 volumes, 2° (555 x 420mm). Half-titles. Titles with engraved vignettes and within engraved borders, 150 engraved plates, some folding, engraved headpieces. (Occasional light marginal spotting, very occasional light offsetting from the plates.) Contemporary russia, sides with gilt and blind border, sprinkled edges (front joint just starting, light wear at corners).
FIRST EDITION, A VERY GOOD COPY IN A HANDSOME BINDING. 'A beautifully produced work' (Blackmer) dedicated to Empress Josephine, and drawing on the great collections at Malmaison, the Musée Napoleon, the Bibliothèque impériale, and the Sèvres manufactury, and also those of the Duke of Dalmatia, Galitzine and other great French collectors. Many of these vases were previously unpublished. RIBA notes that a number of plates published here were among the unpublished plates prepared for the Hamilton Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases (1791-1797).
