MONTGOMERY, Bernard Law, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976). Ten Chapters 1942 to 1945. n.p.: printed by Printing and Stationery Services, 21 Army Group, n.d. . Original black roan. Signed and inscribed 'To: Jorrocks [sic], who played no small part in the events recorded in these chapters', Germany, 14 July 1945; also inscribed by the recipient, Lieutenant-General Brian G. Horrocks; [with] an autograph cheque signed, paying £10 to Horrocks, Berlin, 29 August 1945, signed again and inscribed on verso 'This cheque is in payment of a bet that the German war would not be over by 1-8-45' (somewhat worn).
Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks (1895-1985) served as a corps commander under Montgomery in both the North African and European campaigns, and was described by Eisenhower as 'the outstanding British general under Montgomery'. Horrocks's inscription in the volume, at variance with Montgomery's, records that 'I made a bet with Field Marshal Montgomery that the war would not be over in 1944'.
