2 volumes in one, 2o (312 x 200 mm). Titles printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece portrait. (Some mostly marginal staining and soiling.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, some wear at extremities). Provenance: Ms. Mary Holtes (signature on title-page of vol. 1); Sarah Clayton (signature dated "1759" on title-page of vol. 1); John Saville (signature on front free endpaper dated "1762" and on title-page of vol. 2).
FIRST EDITION. Prepared under the direction of Purcell's widow, this collection is the first attempt to gather together all of his songs. The contents are taken mainly from plays for which Purcell furnished the music, and many of the songs are printed here for the first time. Wing P-4218.
