Title printed in red and black and with woodcut device, 43 woodcut illustrations and diagrams in the text including a few repeats, with the blank A4 (a little soiling and waterstaining, mostly in the margins, a few leaves browned). Modern vellum. Provenance: Francesco Maria Savona, physician (contemporary signature at foot of title) -- a few early marginalia -- THE NORMAN COPY (book-label).
FIRST EDITION containing the first illustrations of Santorio's measuring devices. 'The chief value of this work lies in its revelation (still quite hesitant, although accompanied by diagrams for the first time) of the principles of construction' (DSB) of various diagnostic and measuring instruments designed by Santorio, including a hygrometer, a pendulum for measuring pulse rate, a syringe for extracting bladder stones and a bathing bed.
