SOWERBY, James (1757-1802) and James Edward SMITH (1759-1828). English Botany, or Coloured Figures of British Plants. London: for the author, 1790-1810. Volumes I - XXIII only (of 40), 8° (234 x 139 mm). c.1,656 engraved plates, almost all hand-coloured (preliminaries and titles very slightly spotted, otherwise clean and fresh internally). Contemporary half calf over marbled paper covered boards, flat spines ruled in gilt into 6 compartments, red and black leather gilt lettering pieces in second and fourth compartments (a little rubbed and worn, rather more so at upper joints and headcaps). Nissen BBI 2225; Henrey 1366.

Volumes I-XI only (of 13, lacking the later published vol. XII and supplement). Large 8° (250 x 160 mm), c. 1,824 lithographed plates, almost all hand-coloured (library stamps to rectos & versos of plates). Half blue leather library binding (lightly worn). Provenance: Darlington Public Library (cancelled bookplates and stamps). Nissen BBI 2227; Henrey 1371. Both sold as periodicals, not subject to return. (34)
