4° (300 x 205mm). 7 plates, 3 of these chromolithographs, all with the original printed tissue guards. (Some scattered spotting.) Original white pictorial cloth, spine and sides blocked richly in gilt and black, edges gilt and decorated in red, original blue and gilt endpapers, in the original red cloth box lined with printed paper (light soiling, box with some wear). Provenance: Ivan Alekseevich Zinovev (exemplaire nominatif).
FIRST EDITION, IN THE ORIGINAL BOX, ONE OF 150 COPIES ONLY OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE EDITION. This one, number 56, was printed for Ivan Alekseevich Zinovev (1835-1917), the author, diplomat and honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A rare and finely produced history of one of the most beautiful Russian books of the 19th century: Kondakov's magisterial study of Zvenigorodskoi's spectacular collection of Byzantine enamels.
