Suburban Souls. The Erotic Psychology Of a Man and a Maid. Paris: [Charles Carrington,] 1901.
3 volumes in one, octavo (215 x 140 mm). Titles printed in red and black, with the half titles. (Edges lightly yellowed.) 20th-century black half morocco with the original textured printed paper covers bound in, brown morocco spine label, spine compartments centred with a gilt tool, gilt edges, marbled endpapers. Provenance: J.B. Rund (bookplate, pencilled notes on the front endpaper).
FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC OF 20TH-CENTURY EROTIC FICTION, AND ONE OF THE RAREST EROTIC BOOKS IN ENGLISH. One of 150 copies only, this one numbered 149. Not in the British Library; AE and ABPC record only one copy ever having sold at auction, the Milford Haven-Nordmann copy (Christie's Paris, 14-15 December 2006, lot 57). Gerard Legman has attributed authorship convincingly to John Stephen Farmer, although hard evidence remains elusive. Suburban Souls is one of the most handsome of Carrington's many clandestine publications, employing fine typography and higher quality paper, the same, claims Carrington, used by the Bank of England for its £5 notes. Mendes 139.
