SZPILMAN, Wladyslav (1911-2000). Smierc Miasta. [The Death of a City.] Warsaw: Spoldzielnia Wydawnicza, 1946. 8° (220 x 155mm). Original illustrated wrappers (extremities lightly rubbed with small chips). Provenance: '424' (stamp on verso of front wrapper).
FIRST EDITION of the original narrative which formed the basis for Roman Polanski's The Pianist. The autobiographical account tells the story of a Polish Jewish pianist who survived the Holocaust with the help of Poles and a Nazi officer after he escaped the Warsaw Ghetto. An excellent copy of a fragile book.
