TELENY -- Des Grieux. (The Prelude to “Teleny”.) Vol. I [all published]. [Paris: for Leonard Smithers,] 1899.
Octavo (183 x 128 mm). With the half-title. (A few leaves opened roughly.) Uncut in 20th-century red half morocco, black morocco label up the spine titled in gilt, top edge gilt. Provenance: J.B. Rund (bookplate, pencilled notes on endpaper).
FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE COMPLEMENT TO TELENY. Some uncertainty has surrounded the composition of this important homoerotic text, but Mendes notes that ‘Des Grieux was indeed written by the same hand(s) as Teleny, and possibly before Teleny at that, though not published until 6 years later’. The statement ‘Vol. I’ on the title-page is to reinforce this connection to Teleny, which is to be thought of as ‘Vol. II’. RARE: WorldCat locates no copy in any institution; AE and ABPC do not record any offered at auction; Mendes lists only one other copy. Mendes 123.
