(Some mostly marginal soiling, occasional marginal dampstain, very occasional spotting, a few repairs, a few margins short, vol. 5 lacking leaf 5.5.) Modern dark blue morocco, flat spines gilt, titled in Cyrillic, sides with gilt frames.
FIRST EDITION of one of the great nineteenth-century novels, which stands at the peak of the realist mode. Isaak Babel remarked that 'if the world could write by itself it would write like Tolstoi'. Kilgour 1196.
