In 1679, Vienna was visited by one of the last big plague epidemics. Fleeing the city, Emperor LEOPOLD I vowed to erect a marble mercy column if the epidemic would end. A temporary wooden structure was erected in the same year. Three years later Leopold's vow was renewed. This volume and the large folding plate are commemorating an early conservative design for the memorial column known as "Pestsäule" ("plague column") in Vienna, which was finally inaugurated in High Baroque style 1693.
