Woodcut vignette portrait and woodcuts in the text by Bernard Salomon, folding letterpress and woodcut table, numerous fine woodcut initials (trifling worming in the blank fore-margins at the beginning, occasional light discolouration). 18th-century sprinkled calf, gilt spine (rubbed, upper cover detached). Provenance: John, Baron Cartaret de Hawnes (circular armorial bookplate) -- Metropolitan Museum of Art, W. Gedney Beatty bequest (book-label and duplicate stamp).
FIRST DE TOURNES EDITION - another appeared in 1586 - and the first edition of Vitruvius, with Philander's annotations, to be printed in France. Berlin Kat. 1813; Cartier 237; Cicognara 712; Fowler 406.
