VOLTAIRE, François Marie Arouet, called (1694-1778). Oeuvres completes. [Kehl], Société Littéraire-Typographique, 1784-89. 70 volumes, 8°. Engraved portrait of Voltaire and 107 engraved plates and portraits (without the 5 additional portraits, some staining, waterstaining, occasionally severe, and foxing). 19th-century half calf (vol.III repaired with adhesive tape, spine of vol.LXX brittle). Provenance: Royal United Services Institution (arms in lower compartment of spines) -- Philip Sassoon (bookplate inside front cover and label 'Port Lymone' at foot of front covers).
The celebrated Kehl edition which was due to the efforts of Beaumarchais who had built a printing press at Kehl for the sole purpose of printing the above work. It is said that 28,000 copies were printed. Cohen-de Ricci 1042-47. Sold not subject to return. (70)
