London: Reeve and Co., 1853. 8° (219 x 135mm), tinted lithographed frontispiece, 8 lithographic plates by and after Wallace, one map, folding letterpress table. (Some marginal spotting and browning.) Brown half morocco for Henry Sotheran, spine gilt, top edge gilt (a little rubbed).
FIRST EDITION. Wallace stayed in the vast natural laboratory of the Amazon for four years, coming into contact with native peoples unaffected by European influence, and sending home a sizeable quantity of natural history specimens, mainly of birds and insects. Barba de Moraes II, p. 368.
