WITTGENSTEIN, Ludwig (1889-1951). Wörterbuch für Volks- und Bürgerschulen. Vienna: Hölder, Pichler and Tempsky, 1926.
8° (215 x 150mm). (Browned, light soiling.) Facsimile of the later preface tipped-in at end. Original wrappers, printed in dark blue and black (spine faded, lower side stained, light wear).
FIRST EDITION. One of only two substantial texts published in Wittgenstein's lifetime. Compiled while teaching in an elementary school, the Wörterbuch is directly concerned with Wittgenstein's complaint about the distorting effect of writing on meaning -- a key factor in his reluctance to publish his own work. His preface to this work was only published in the facsimile edition of 1977. RARE. KVK lists only 3 copies worldwide: at the German National Library, the Austrian National Library, and at Salzburg University.
