XU XIAOBING AND HOU BO
Mao Tsetung. A Selection of Photographs. The People's Fine Arts Publishing House, 1978.
Quarto (370 x 310mm). 200 colour photographs. Original burgundy cloth, front cover and spine lettered in gilt, printed endpapers, acetate dust-jacket, original cardboard slipcase (minor wear on the acetate, some staining on the slipcase).
FIRST EDITION, COMPLETE WITH THE ACETATE JACKET AND SLIPCASE. Hou Bo's 'superb, iconic images in this fascinating book' were often reproduced, but she fell out of favour with Mao's wife Jiang Jing, ended up in a labour camp and was never credited nor received copyright for these photographs. Published in various languages, it has been suggested that the book no longer fit the political agenda and was suppressed after publication. The Photobook, vol. I, p.185.
