    Lot Essay

The present watercolour depicts the two masted brigantine, the Riby Grove, unloading cargo with the city of Riga, Latvia and the famous church of St. Peter's in the skyline beyond. The Riby Grove was launched at Whitby in 1818 under a Captain John Dunkerly. The Riby Grove is depicted here as a trading vessel, but was also registered as a whaling vessel between the years 1834 to 1838.
