A FRAGMENT OF AN AMETHYST QUARTZ CRYSTAL GEODE
The geode is a hollow nodule of stone, lined on the inside with inward-projecting crystals.
Ranging from glassy violet and purple to red, the amethyst is a type of quartz that gets its name from the Ancient Greek amethustos ("not intoxicated") in reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. Traditionally associated with purity and piety, they have always been valued by royal households due to the association of the colour purple with royalty.
The story of the origin of the amethyst comes from Greek myths: insulted one day by a mere mortal, Bacchus, the god of wine, swore that the next mortal that crossed his path would be attacked by fierce tigers, created to do his bidding. Unaware of the danger ahead, a beautiful maiden name Amethysta appeared to pay tribute to the Goddess Diana. To protect her from tiger's claws, Diana stepped in and changed the young girl into a statue of rock crystal. When he saw the magnificent lifeless statue, a remorseful Bacchus wept tears over the crystal maiden, creating the purple stone that we know today
