The distinctive form of this chest suggests that it was made for the Danish market as it corresponds to furniture produced in the region of Altona in around 1770-80. Given its scale, the chest would have been expensive to ship and much more difficult to execute; such pieces were frequently specific commissions. Closely related examples are illustrated in A. Kratz, Altonaer Möbel Des Rokoko und Klassizismus, Hamburg, 1988, pp.210-211, figs.33 and 34. A virtually identical commode with dragon feet was sold from the Diana Dollar Knowles Collection, Christie's New York, 22 October 2013, lot 118 ($47,500). A related Chinese Export commode for the Danish market was sold anonymously at Christie's, New York, 6 June 2013, lot 4 ($127,000).
