BY H.SAMUEL, LATE 19TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF WILLIAM KENT
The panelled back within an imbricated foliate and shell-carved surround with a pair of masks, the scrolled foliate arms with dolphin- carved supports, the moulded seat with panelled, shell and guilloche frieze concealing a drawer, with rosette blocks to the corners and tapering turned, foliate and fluted legs, stamped to the underside 'H.SAMUEL 484 OXFORD ST LONDON'.

Lot Essay

Henry Samuel, dealer in works of art (fl.1881 - 1913) regularly name-stamped his stock. See C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700 - 1840, Leeds, 1996.
An octagonal partners' desk bearing his stamp was sold Christie's, London, 21 November, 2006, lot 457.
