Each serpentine toprail carved with shell corners above a pierced rockwork and C-scroll splat, the drop-in needlework seat on square tapering legs joined by stretchers and block feet

Lot Essay

The patterns for the splat is taken from a design for 'Chairs' by Thomas Chippendale, published in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director (1st. ed., 1754, pl. XII; and 3rd ed., 1762, pls. XIII & XIV).
