Lot Essay

In the opinion of Professor Enrico Colle, the design of this pair of tables relates to a painted credenza from c1730 illustrated in Il Palazzo Chigi-Zondadari a San Quirico D'Orcia, Siena ( published by Nuova Immagine 1992 ). This table or credenza, illustrated here, was placed in a hallway and converted into a bed at night for use by a guard (with thanks to Prince Agostino Chigi for providing this illustration)
