Tole peinte, which the following three lots have been created, was produced in north Italy and particularly in Piedmont already during the 18th century. Colorful and light, and of course cheaper than bronze models, tole peinte objects, particularly for lighting, were used as well in prestigious places such as Stupinigi, circa 1765, (see, M. Tagliapietra Rasi, L. Tamburini, Museo dell'Arredamento Stupinigi la Palazzina di caccia, Turin 1966, pl. 178). Neoclassical models such as the pair of wall-lights here offered were produced as early as 1780-90 and throughout the 19th Century. Interestingly, a tole peinte lantern featuring similar decorative elements such as the husks, leaf and floral sprays was exhibited in the Mostra del Barocco Piemontese, Turin, in 1963, see exhibition catalogue, pl. 293.
