Lot Essay

The hall chair's design relates to the early 19th century Grecian style adopted by Gillows of Lancaster. A pair of related mahogany hall chairs stamped by the Dublin cabinet-makers Williams & Gibton was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 28 September 2001, lot 89 (£6,600). Another pair with the crest of the Dillon family was sold anonymously Bonham's, London, 12 February 2002, lot 88.
