Lot Essay
The drawing-room centre-table is supported by embowed dolphins evoking the history of the poet Arion who, in Greek myth, was rescued from pirates by dolphins. The 'French' fashioned design was invented during the reign of King George IV and featured in Rudolph Ackermann's The Repository of Arts, May, 1825.
A related dolphin-supported marble table was sold Christie's, New York, 15 October 1994, lot 416 and at one time furnished Moccas Court, Herefordshire (see J.Fowler and J.Cornforth, English Decoration in the Eighteenth Century, London, 1978, p. 143, fig. 123).
